White-headed munia (Lonchura maja)

White-headed munia (Lonchura maja) is a bird species belonging to the family Estrildidae. It is a small bird, measuring 8–11 cm in length and weighing 5–25 grams, characterized by a white head and throat, brown irises, a bluish-gray beak, and pale blue legs.

L. maja features a white head and throat, while the rest of its body is a plain brown. Juveniles are brown in color. They produce a high-pitched "peep" call when gathered in flocks.





This species is widely distributed at elevations of up to 1,500 meters, inhabiting areas such as marshes, rice paddies, open grasslands, and gardens. During the rice harvest season, they form large flocks, but they separate into pairs during the breeding season. The female lays 4–6 white eggs in a spherical nest constructed from grass.
