NEWS - Chengkou meshweaver (Cicurina chengkou sp. nov. ♂♀), Daba Mountain meshweaver (Cicurina dabashan sp. nov. ♂♀) and long hook meshweaver (Cicurina longihamata sp. nov. ♂♀) from Daba Mountain National Nature Reserve in Chongqing, China, were added as new species to science in Cicurina Menge 1871.

Daba Mountain National Nature Reserve is located in the southern Dabashan Mountains with many intersecting valleys. The heterogeneous habitats create conditions for independent evolution of species and have given rise to many endemic species such as ferns and flowering plants, including Botrychium sutchuenense, Asplenium humistratum, Primula phagosa, and the beetle Neobisnius chengkouensis.

A comprehensive survey of the biological resource background of Chongqing Daba Mountain National Nature Reserve was conducted in 2011. A total of 181 macro fungi, 3572 tracheophytes, 884 insects, 68 mammals, 233 birds, 24 reptiles, 25 amphibians, and 44 fish species were recorded.

However, only 13 species of spiders have been recorded in the Nature Reserve: Amaurobius spinatus Zhang, Wang & Zhang 2018, Chrosiothes pengqi Lin & Li 2024, Coscinida hantao Lin & Li 2024, Mallinella zhoushengboi Lin & Li 2024, Onomastus zhuwu Lin & Li 2024, Orchestina xiebao Lin & Li 2024, Otacilia lubrica Mu & Zhang 2021, Otacilia pyriformis Fu, Zhang & Zhang 2016, Otacilia wuli Mu & Zhang 2021, Phricotelus yangxiong Lin & Li 2024, Synagelides huangxin Lin & Li 2024, Tekellina haosiwen Lin & Li 2024 and Yaginumena xuanzan Lin & Li 2024.

Cicurina is the largest genus in the Cicurinidae with 144 species worldwide. Most (114 species) are recorded from North America and a few (28 species) are found in Asia. Currently, there are 20 species of Cicurina found in China. This is the first study to detail the spider diversity of Daba Mountain National Nature Reserve.

C. chengkou is similar to C. dabashan in having a short and wide retrolateral tibial apophysis, a long and strong embolus, a strong and beak-like conductor, a posteriorly located epigynal atrium, and spherical spermathecae.

Both differ in having a long RTA (vs. short in C. dabashan), an apical conductor as long as the base of the conductor (vs. about half the length of the base of the conductor) and an oblong atrium (vs. slightly oval), a short copulatory duct (vs. long).

C. dabashan is similar to Cicurina lichuanensis Wang, Zhou & Peng 2019 in having a similarly shaped retrolateral tibial apophysis, a long and strong embolus, a posteriorly located epigynal atrium and spherical spermathecae.

Both differ by a tegulum with a small process (vs. no process in C. lichuanensis), a conductor with a short, sclerotic and sharp tip (vs. with a long and blunt tip) and an unconnected anterior edge of the atrium (vs. connected).

C. longihamata is similar to Cicurina eburnata Wang 1994 in having a similarly shaped retrolateral tibial apophysis, a long and strong embolus, a strong and hook-like conductor, a posteriorly located epigynal atrium.

Both differ by a conductor with a long, needle-like and C-shaped tip (vs. a short and blunt tip in C. eburnata), a C-shaped copulatory duct and flask-shaped spermathecae (vs. rod-shaped and spherical).

Long leaf stems and white waxy, arranged alternately, growing in all directions, green on the bottom and redish on the top. Leaves have 3-7 fingers each up to 25 cm long and up to 15 cm wide, ellipses become obovoid, sometimes pandurate and apex acute. Each leaf finger has a bone in the middle that moves linearly with some pinnate bones. The upper surface is green and slightly shiny, the lower surface is whitish green. The base of the leaf is centered at the end of the stalk, the pointed end which ends at the head of the sp...

Sandbox tree (Hura crepitans)

Sandbox tree ( Hura crepitans ) is species in Euphorbiaceae, a tropical tree, growing up to 60 meters tall and with a trunk circumference of up to 13.2 meters, the trunk is covered with long and sharp thorns and exudes a poisonous sap. H. crepitans has large, oval leaves, 15 cm wide and 20 cm long. The petioles are 22 cm long. The flowers are red and lack petals. Male flowers grow on long stalks, while female flowers grow singly in leaf axils. The fruit is a large, flask-shaped capsule, up to 10 cm in diameter, with 12-16 radially arranged carpels. The seeds are flat and about 2 cm in diameter. The capsule bursts when ripe, dividing into segments and ejecting the seeds at a speed of 70 m/s, a distance of 30-100 meters. This tree prefers moist soil and partial shade or partial to full sun, a warm, humid environment. It is often cultivated for shade. The wood is light and used to make canoes. The sap is used to poison fish. Kingdom: Plantae Phylum: Tracheophyta Subphylum: Angiosperma...

Flamboyant (Delonix regia)

Flamboyan or flame tree or flame of the forest or flamboyant ( Delonix regia ) are plant members of the Fabaceae which are typical of large semi-evergreen trees and bright red flowers. This tree is generally cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions, growing wide to form tall canopy or umbrella 9-15 meters. D. regia will fall during the dry season in the two seasons, but will remain green in the spring and winter in the four seasons. The leaves have feathers on the surface, the reinforcement system is pinnate with a length of 30.5-50.8 cm and width 11-25 cm. The flamboyant flowers bloom seasonally, usually bloom in mid-summer, have a diameter between 8 and 15 cm, have four petals that spread red or orange-red to 4–7 cm long and an upright crown. The slightly larger petals are marked in yellow and white. Pods are packed in flat wood, lined with 70 cm long and 7 cm wide, green, but turn dark brown when old. The bark is generally yellowish brown or dark brown. Kingdom: ...
