H. macrophylla grows to 2 m, 2.5 m wide, stems erect and branched. Leaves have stalks, sitting opposite, oval or elongated, up to 15 cm long, thick, blunt base and pointed tip.
The leaves have a large bone in the middle with several pinnate veins, the margins are serrated, the upper surface is dark green and glossy, the lower surface is pale green.
Flowers are corymbs, growing at the apex in a panicle with branching stalks, Blooms pink or blue or white or yellow or purple depending on soil pH which affects pigment discoloration.
